![]() Ask Karen I'm a gerontologist, family and elder mediator licensed in nursing home administration specialized in Alzheimer’s and related dementia care and conflict. My experience speaks to the continuum of care. I've worked for leading hospital organizations, continuing care retirement organization's special care units, palliative care, hospice; conducted research, product line development and have partnered on new construction of Alzheimer's Assisted Living facilities. For CMS I partnered with Ohio's QIO to implement a dispute resolution service, conducted staff training and contracted for mediations. Mediating quality of care complaints for CMS medicare beneficiaries has extended awareness of the elder's perspective on service delivery and the quality of their care. Click Here for CMS Mediation Option I continue to find my qualitative research skills are key to mediating cases. Active listening is the conveyor of the mediation process where disputant concern(s) and common threads emerge to craft agreements. Mediating quality of care complaints for Medicare beneficiaries also raises awareness of the elder's perspective on the quality of their care contributing to what we know and what we need to know. Today, mediation is widely recognized as a trusted service for carers and their conflicts. Online mediation enhances convenience of mediation service and client satisfaction. I earned my Certification in Mediation from Wastenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI; family caregiver mediation and adult guardianship mediation awarded from The Center for Social Gerontology in Ann Arbor. Corporate Executive-Director-in-Training was completed in Gaithersburg, MD with field experience at Arden Courts in Sterling Heights, MI. Public Health and Longterm Care Administration at The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill was integrated into my Administrator-in-Training for licensure. My Master’s Certificate in Gerontology, The Institute of LifeSpan Development and Gerontology and Master’s Degree in Sociology of Medicine, Health and Family were awarded from The University of Akron, in Ohio. Professional education and University adjunct roles include traditional and online support life long learning. Students and families report that information from my chapter, From the Home to the Nursing Home: Does Elder Dementia Make a Difference? published in The Encyclopedia of Home Care for the Elderly, is beneficial.
