New To The Internet?


Generations on Line is a national nonprofit Internet literacy program for seniors.
It has developed a free, interface which simplifies the Medicare site.

The interface helps seniors work with the Medicare site regardless of a lack of computer experience. The link for this new program is http://www.golmedicare.org

You are not alone in being new to internet use.

Kaiser Family Foundation found that only 2% of all seniors had accessed www.medicare.gov.

Another study reported that nearly 80% of people over 65 do not have access to computers or, they do but are not computer literate.

This help site is free and provides step-by-step instructions to help you enroll in the new drug card benefits and even to determine eligibility for a $600 drug credit for low-income seniors. The program also provides a simplified internet program for seniors
in nursing homes, retirement homes, senior centers and public libraries offering with free simplified e-mail and other features.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
now offers a talking website for older adults AND now offers a new Spanish-Language Website

www.nihseniorhealth.gov is a "senior friendly website" designed to encourage and assist older people's use of the Internet. PBS' "Independent Lens," is a weekly documentary program featuring independent films, will begin showings of "Almost Home," a 90-minute documentary that chronicles one year at St. John's on the Lake, a Milwaukee retirement community which offers independent living, assisted living and a nursing home levels of care. This model has sought to shift from a medical model of care to a social model. The film profiles the director of St. John's, as well as nursing assistants, residents and their family members. The program Web site will include an interview with filmmakers Lisa Gildehaus and Brad Lichtenstein, an interactive forum for viewers and links to related resources. New Database Compares Insurance
Costs In Metropolitan Areas

A new federal database allows companies, consumers, healthcare analysts, and others to compare health insurance costs among the nation’s largest cities and geographical areas.

The data table was developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and provides statistics on average annual costs for companies and workers contributing to private-sector health insurance.

The data show large geographical variations in how much Americans pay for both family and individual coverage, as well as how much employers contribute to workers’ health insurance premiums, according to an AHRQ release.

The database also provides comparisons within states.

Volunteering to Fight A Killer

The National Institute of Aging, along with its public and private partners in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), began recruiting the 800 people needed to participate in a $60 million, five-year study designed to find biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease on February 9th.

"We now have about 50 sites qualified for MR imaging," says Michael W. Weiner, MD, director of the Center for Imaging of Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco, and the principal investigator of the ADNI."

"If we keep enrolling at this rate, we could be finished in a year, but I really think it will take more like 14 to 18 months because the MCI [mild cognitive impairment] patients are the hardest to get."
