   Mediation is effective for the special care conflicts that plague families caring for Alzheimer's and related dementia. Topics of disputes have become numerous. Some include: adult guardianship, family issues, divorce, child protection, business, contract, landlord/tenant, property damage, neighbor issues, domestic violence, discrimination and other workplace issues, intellectual property, real estate, personal injury, malpractice, victim-offender, civil rights and special education. A new mediation topic started fall, 2003 Quality of Care Mediation. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) added a mediation component to their Medicare Beneficiary Protection Program in September, 2003 which is run through their national network of Quality Improvement Organizations. CMS offers mediation as an optional method to resolving quality of care complaints that Medicare patients or their sponsors file against a physician or healthcare provider.
